ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a range of practical No Bullshit Therapy (NBT) tools. This first allows supervisors to provide supervisees with honest and direct feedback. Called, NBT self-supervision, the tool can also be used with clients to help them have difficult conversations with, or make requests of, other family members. Again, detailed transcripts and practical examples are provided that will help the reader to use these tools in their own work.

The second half of the chapter is built on the idea that direct feedback from a good place is a gift; a gift that many of us desire, but seldom receive. It is also a gift that we seldom give. Using the image of a hand as a mnemonic, this section provides a light-hearted description of two ineffective, but recognisable styles of providing sensitive feedback: Beating about the bush hand and the direct-hit hand, an overly harsh approach. The chapter concludes with the recommended, even-handed, and more effective, NBT Hand, a step-by-step approach to giving critical feedback at work and in everyday life.
