ABSTRACT

This chapter provides valuable information and tools for parents and teachers seeking to support children with selective mutism (SM) on their journey to recovery. It provides practical guidance on supporting children with SM in various settings, such as school, home, and the community, and helping the child make connections and transitions among these settings. SM can profoundly affect a child's life, leading to academic, social, emotional, and psychological issues. Negative reinforcement is the key maintaining factor of SM. The rescuer might feel distressed knowing the child will not utter a word. An image titled Overcome Selective Mutism Journey represents a winding path, symbolizing the process of overcoming selective mutism. Depending on the child's specific needs, a teacher can assign an accompanying buddy to sit next to the child and assist him/her when needed. The playdates should be fun and suitable for both parties. Parents should facilitate these playdates to make them effective.
