ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the vital role of teachers, the third essential component, in the recovery journey of children with selective mutism (SM). The emphasis is on the importance of easing students’ transitions by visiting the new school before the new school year/term/semester, attending back-to-school evenings, and participating in moving up days before the school year ends. Parents may ask the school to give them a week or month to try it out and show that dramatic improvement can be achieved. SM is a fear of speaking, but it can be overcome with the proper support in place. Amy graduated from 1st grade and was looking forward to starting her 2nd grade at a new school. The new teacher can join the private tour and set up tasks that will help the child interact with their peers later, such as showing classmates where the books are and accompanying them to the bathroom.
