ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the challenges children with selective mutism (SM) may face in school and provides suggestions for parents and teachers. The child can point to the rooms on the school layout schema to show parents where they have difficulties. For instance, the highlight of the butterfly project, subject helpers in technology class, and playing the Chinese harp in music class as potential avenues for showcasing the child's strengths. When the child hesitates to go to the bathroom, pair her with a buddy. When the child is afraid of making mistakes in art class, the teacher lets her sit next to a talking buddy who can help out anytime. A man stands at an entranceway, shaking hands with a young girl as she enters. Teachers should greet children with a smile and understand that the child is not being rude if they don’t answer back.
