ABSTRACT

Joining clubs or sports teams, volunteering, and working part-time jobs are excellent ways to engage in social activities and enhance communication skills. Dancing, joining clubs, and doing volunteer work had accompanied Amy along her selective mutism (SM) journey. Being a Girl Scout helped Amy make a circle of friends who grew up together and supported each other. The child has come a long way in learning to respond to questions from non-verbal to sounds, words, phrases, and sentences, from passively answering questions to asking questions and initiating conversations. Even though a playdate is highly effective in building rapport with peers, forming a buddy system, and expanding the circle of friends, when the child gets older, such as a teenager, it is not so easy to invite peers home for a playdate. However, the young person can go out to meet other children with the same interests through various activities, such as clubs, sports, volunteering, and part-time jobs.
