ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2, focus is on how the Arctic becomes an actual or symbolic repository for the past. Firstly, the chapter addresses narratives in which ghosts in particular ways are tied to or produced by place, with special attention paid to how the Arctic enables or hinders the specters’ visibility and legibility. Secondly, the chapter investigates the function of peripheral but manifest Arctic monsters teasing out how the Arctic produces or harbors these marvelous entities, and how their monstrous presence affects the Arctic. Thirdly, the chapter turns to how thaws and melts function in fictions underpinned by speculative science.
