ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the antecedents of the history of Portuguese banking institutions that help us to understand the genesis of the Bank of Lisbon. It presents several bank projects that appeared in the period before the 1820 Revolution and explains why they were not successful. The chapter also elucidates how these projects and antecedents fit into the broader panorama of the history of economic ideas about themes relating to monetary theory and policy.
