ABSTRACT

The economic and cultural traditions of peoples who are preliterate have probably remained stationary for thousands of years. There is very little deviation from traditional ways of behaving on the part of all members of a given society. With the latest revolution of all, the industrial and scientific revolution, cultural isolation and stability, even within one generation, have become things of the past for most of the population of the world. In family life, in leisure relationships generally, in religious observances, certain unselfish attitudes and types of behaviour are customary, but in work and political relationships the stress is on aggressive self-seeking and success. Some habits are conditioned continuously from birth, and show no dichotomy or contradiction between the behaviour which is expected in childhood and that of adulthood. The right balance throughout childhood will lead to balanced adulthood, and balanced adults will lead to a balanced civilization in which men can co-operate wholeheartedly.
