ABSTRACT

This chapter is about truth and suggests a precise definition that is based on the philosophical approach to truth known as the correspondence theory of truth. The logical properties of truth will be examined, along with semantic constraints on truth-functional meaning, namely tense, aspect, and modality. The relationships between language and truth will be reassessed from the perspective of philosophy of language, which is mainly based on Grice's theory of non-natural meaning and Austin's theory of speech acts. The relationship between truth and belief will also be discussed, as will the subjective property of truth and the relationship between truth and lies.
