ABSTRACT
This chapter engages with the ‘real world’ of translation as a professional practice in different situations and in sites of potential conflict. It discusses the role of translation in multilingual institutions such as the European Union, multicultural societies and minority and migrant groups and discusses the ethics in translation practice, extending it to translation in areas of conflict and war and the increasing role of citizen media involving ad hoc translation. The chapter looks at a type of translation which is fast growing in importance today: audiovisual translation. The official EU policy that all languages are equal has a further consequence: that translations are not really translations but ‘language versions’ suggesting that the texts are produced simultaneously in all the EU languages.
