ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book reviews an emerging body of evidence on the link between internationalisation, innovation and regional development. It highlights some vertical policies showing how the region can interact with the global value chain (GVC). The book discusses the governance role the lead firm takes up in directing the GVC, elaborating the specific types of governance and how they interact with value chain links. It outlines the internationalisation of multinational enterprise (MNE) decision-making, specifically how foreign entry modes chosen by the MNE have implications for the GVC. The book looks at what regional decision-makers can do to action change upon GVCs. It focuses on what the digital and green transitions and the potential sustainable restructuring of GVCs imply for public policy.
