ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates that the relationship between microcredit self-help group programmes and women’s empowerment is complex and details how different models of programming result in different outcomes. This chapter further provides recommendations as to how women’s empowerment can best be realised. It details how Gender and Development can be revitalised for the 21st Century by improving its intersectional focus and by drawing on key ideas from within Indian feminist movements, including Dalit feminism. This chapter also outlines how gender-transformative approaches can be adopted with significant organisational support. It argues that the key ideas of power, dignity, mobility and solidarity need to shape contemporary understandings of empowerment.
