ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the connection between women’s physical mobility and empowerment is too frequently overlooked. This chapter explores how women’s physical mobility can be substantially expanded by belonging to a microcredit self-help group programme, as illustrated by case study examples. This chapter further details, however, the limitations placed on women’s mobility. By drawing on the idea of ‘disciplined mobility’ and by further analysing the notion of ‘invisible power’, this chapter explains how patriarchy continues to restrict women. This chapter further details how patriarchy maintains its dominance and restricts women’s empowerment by constantly monitoring and threatening women and by ensuring that women self-regulate to conform to patriarchal expectations.
