ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the topic of intimate relationships. It looks at the many ways in which relationships meet our needs, including the need to belong and more relationship-specific needs such as intimacy, companionship, sex, security, and emotional involvement. It also considers the impact being cut off from others has on individuals. The chapter devotes some time for a close look at how intimate relationships have evolved and changed over the years. It includes in the age at which people get married along with changes in the respective roles contemporary marriage partners play in the household. Finally, we discuss why for many remaining single has become a desirable choice.
