ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 examines perceptions of fairness through a focus on resource exchange and equity. Theoretical frameworks include equity theory, comparison level theory, investment model, and communal-exchange theory. Research indicates mixed support for equity theory. Comparison level theory correlates satisfaction and dependence with stay/leave decisions. Commitment’s mediation of attractiveness and a meta-analysis lend support for investment model factors. Manipulated expectations reveal principles guiding communal and exchange relationships. This chapter includes insights into resource exchange, theories, and research contribution to understanding relationship equity, commitment, and exchange orientations.
