ABSTRACT

The movement from mindful avoidance to mindful action may seem long and overwhelming. However, the beginning of that movement may be quite straightforward. The primary potential of keeping Mindful Logs was the clear distinction between the two situations: the situation when people acted and the one where they did not. Working with Mindful Logs offers structured training in mindful awareness that, in turn, encourages mindful action. This is a structured exercise that underscores the potential of generating and enhancing awareness of oneself, others and the situation one is a part of. The psychodynamic tradition speaks of role valency. The concept, which was introduced by Bion, describes an individual's inclination to be sucked into and ending up in the same role across different groups and situations, for example the role as someone who is always being helpful and nurturing or as someone who is always taking responsibility and so forth.
