ABSTRACT

In fact, individuals in ANY cultural context will tend to reject humility if it is associated with self-denial and abasement. On the other hand, when humility is defined as a down-to-earth perspective of oneself in relation to all other beings and accurate and realistic self-knowledge, it only becomes desirable, but also necessary for survival and success regardless of tradition or culture. The scores get somewhat better, if we look at what employees say once they have read the definition of humility and are then asked how humble their direct manager is according to this definition. One of the underlying reasons for Britain doing well on many of the scores may come from the fact that many managers still start working at the very young age of 20/21 directly after finishing university. The assumption is that anyone entering the workplace so early on in life knows that he or she still has much to learn.
