ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the empirical evidence to determine whether humility can actually play a relevant role in political life. Things become more complex when it comes to the relationship with voters. Research has shown that the avoidant style in general is negatively correlated with humility. If you look at some of the politicians that are regarded as humble such as former US-President Obama or the former President from Uruguay José Mujica, you can see that in their speeches they show concern for their audience, they manage to convey that they are taking care of them and that people can feel safe with them. In this way, they will partly manage to shift people of avoidant type to trusting them. While this is only a first piece of evidence, this goes in the direction of the research seen above, which showed narcissism tempered by humility to be a successful combination also in managers.
