ABSTRACT

The shaman is a religious leader in many of the societies that lack witches; but anthropology has shown that shamans are believed to share many of the terrible attributes of the witch, further supporting the book's claim of universality of the fears and fantasies that characterize the witch. The witch of late medieval Europe, an agent of Satan, displayed all 14 attributes, and fears of Satanism with almost all the traits (lacking only flying, transforming, and sharing power with a familiar) persist in conspiracy theories to the present day. The chapter ends with a general conclusion, summarizing the book's central argument and how it has been verified.
