ABSTRACT

No company set out to hire a tech team because the executive team wanted to see pretty code. Alas, when leadership lacks other tools for measuring their tech efforts, the only way to justify ROI is to look at output, not outcomes. This makes teams myopic and reduces their leverage. The proper yardstick can unlock talent growth and help the readers keep the flywheel spinning. Sometimes, CEOs ask the authors how they can even tell whether their tech executives are doing well. When asked for their ideas, they merely shrug because they view technology as an eccentric creature that behaves differently from the rest of the company. Other times, they think that their tech leaders should be treated differently because they are “geeks” and do not act like other executives in the company.
