ABSTRACT

An obvious advantage is that software, as opposed to hardware, is innately more malleable and flexible. That strong point is too often diluted because, as flexible as software can be, it also abides by Conway's law. Therefore, whatever organizational structure the readers decide to use significantly impacts the team's effectiveness, and these structures are orders of magnitude harder to change. After all, employees don't thrive in environments that go through quarterly reorganizations or changing managers and teams capriciously. A considerable portion of the effort to leverage the readers tech talent is about their tech force structure, composition, and size. It is also often a contention point between senior leadership and the other tech executives. This chapter aims to supply the readers with the tools to engage in these arguments intelligently and equipped with models to make the right decisions.
