ABSTRACT

A Google research team famously surveyed their most effective groups in search of the critical ingredients of top teams and ranked psychological safety as the most crucial factor. Psychological safety means that one feels that the team is a safe space where there is no danger of making foolish comments, speaking up, and making mistakes in general. As straightforward as it might seem, is to regularly give people permission to speak up, question the current thinking, and suggest different directions. Going hand in hand with giving permission and asking people to speak up is how you react when they finally do. After all, if employees do not speak up due to a lack of psychological safety with their boss, they are not likely to tell that to their boss. Special effort should be given to cultivating chutzpah in international organizations.
