ABSTRACT

No matter how well your R&D team is running, some problems are bound to happen. Especially for executives without a technical background, these issues might pose an incomprehensible obstacle. That is because they cannot be sure whether it is a genuine problem or whether the suggested solution is the right one. In case of deterioration from a previous standard as the team grew, be aware that it is almost always the case in the first few months after teams grow. The extra effort necessary to bring the other engineers up to speed often takes a toll on the more experienced team members. Therefore your star engineers have less time to deliver themselves. This is known as Brooks's law: adding people to a project that is behind schedule delays its completion even further. Things should get back to where they were and even improve within a quarter or two in case the team is not going through constant rapid hiring.
