ABSTRACT

Reliant on the developmental theory of Dr. Masterson, Dr. Ralph Klein pioneered the developmental self and object relations approach to the schizoid dilemma. In reviewing the seminal work of Drs. Ronald Fairbairn and Harry Guntrip, Klein found that the focus of schizoid analysands was not so much on the trauma of separating from the needed other (the borderline dilemma) or the need for fusion and the reliance on idealized defenses (the narcissistic dilemma), but rather, on a deep fear of connectedness, as being connected was experienced as being colonized and appropriated. With this unique understanding and clinical orientation, Klein set out to map the intrapsychic dilemma of the schizoid within the Masterson tradition.
