ABSTRACT

Punishment is the least pleasant and least educational consequence that can be applied to a child for their actions. Sometimes the child seeks confrontation or punishment because they need to feel that their parents are giving them attention. It is very important to remember that all children need a lot of time to play and receive attention from their parents. Telling them off only punishes their needs and reinforces their bad behaviour. When parents think about consequences, they immediately think of punishments. However, punishments are not usually necessary, as life provides the consequences needed to make the child understand what kind of behaviour offers them the best results. The job of the parents can therefore be as simple as showing the child the consequences of their actions, according to basic rules. Another basic rule for correcting inappropriate behaviour is to make amends when harm to other people or objects has been caused.
