ABSTRACT

Modern science has not yet produced a calming medicine as effective as a few kind words. An essential part of the development of emotional intelligence is being able to overcome our own fears. Many parents do not know what to do when their child encounters a traumatic experience. Some parents become agitated and shout at the child, causing a higher degree of alarm in the brain and increasing the trauma. In other cases, the natural response of the parent is to ask the child to calm down and to downplay the situation. Believe it or not, this attitude can be as harmful as the previous one. Certainly, making light of the situation when a child has tripped or has been frightened by something will lighten the emotional load and help the child to calm down.
