ABSTRACT

This chapter offers guidelines for how to get started with the daily treatment in a way that ensures a parent’s best success. The first section focuses on choosing a proper time and place and highlights things to focus on and items to prepare in advance of the first session. It then answers common questions regarding time commitment, length of treatment and what to expect regarding progress. The remainder of the chapter focuses on how to measure progress. It introduces two simple, research-based parent checklists to assess both the parent’s and the child’s progress. It then helps the parent outline shorter- and longer-term goals. The chapter ends by focusing on the need for consistency and persistence and addresses some of the difficulties parents may encounter.
