ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on how parents can foster their own self-regulation to bring the best version of themselves for their child as they do QST. It begins by showing that the way in which parents regulate their own stress has a direct impact on the efficacy of the routine and their innate parental instincts. Simple, body-based techniques then provide ‘sensory solutions’ that busy parents can use to identify and quiet their own physical stress. Quieting a parent’s emotional stress is also examined by listing the common, sometimes uncomfortable, emotions parents frequently experience and by offering a series of helpful and clarifying questions that a parent can ask themselves at those difficult times. These tools help parents to find a better sense of their own inner calm so they can bring that sense of open connection to their child.
