ABSTRACT

The book had begun with the aim of exploring an interesting relationship between Muslim women’s activism, political field, and Islam. The main argument was thus: specificity of the political field has shaped these women’s activism and, to a large extent, their engagement with religion. The chapters have explained the journey and its interplays. These explain Mumbai city’s specific political field and its significant contribution in flourishing the agendas of women’s organisations; the agendas and demands of these organisations are also not free from the influences. The book also explains the impact of the organisational activism in the lives of these women, their personal experiences and challenges that have forced them to step out of the four walls. Lastly, this book tries to explore a new form of activism, the critical-religion-centred activism that further explains the connection between women’s Islamic subjectivity, activism, and democratic politics.
