ABSTRACT

The SEND Code of Practice: 0 to 25 Years (DfE and DoH, 2015) states that some children and young people may experience a wide range of social and emotional difficulties which manifest themselves in many ways. This chapter introduces you to discourses surrounding mental health and associated terminology and invites you to examine underpinning theory and research evidence in relation to SEMH, attachment disorders and ADHD. It will introduce you to the aetiology of SEMH, attachment disorders and ADHD and help you to understand the importance of Adverse Childhood Experiences and trauma as well as review the belief that ADHD is a social construct.
