ABSTRACT

This chapter explores approaches to support issues associated with Cognition and Learning Needs, and will highlight examples for PMLD, SLD and dyslexic individuals. It focuses on the theoretical underpinning, research studies and evidence-based research and practice, for some of the main approaches used in an educational context. It signposts you to videoclips showing how the approach is used in practice. It examines underpinning theory and research evidence in relation to approaches from the continuum related to this area of need (PMLD, SLD and SpLD). It invites you to review the approaches with respect to evidence-based research and practice. These approaches include the use of SMART and SCRUFFY targets, Assessment of and for Learning, Objects of Reference, Intensive Interaction, eye gaze, TEACCH®, and supporting dyslexic learners.
