ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on the data collected through a primary survey conducted in Western Uttar Pradesh, India, a region with a sizable Muslim population. The purpose of the data collection was to conduct a micro-level examination of Muslims’ intergenerational educational and occupational behavior. In essence, the profile and characteristics of the sample population are covered in this chapter. Agriculture is the most prevalent economic activity among sample homes, employing a considerable fraction of the population in a range of occupations, including cultivators, agricultural laborers and animal care. Other economic activities in which the Muslim population is engaged include construction, brass handicraft production, and small-to-medium and large wooden handicraft units. The labor is also engaged in small grocery stores, cafés, vegetable sales, peddlering, teaching and mechanics, among others (clothes, eateries, etc.). The participation of female labor has been found to be extremely low.
