ABSTRACT

Most performers are probably familiar with a well-known technique, typically attributed to Constantin Stanislavski as the creator, called circles of concentration. With this technique the performer begins by concentrating just in the vicinity close to the body – perhaps looking down at their hands or something within inches of their eyes. As an individual actor, you want to be aware of your own energy onstage, and where you focus that energy. Working with these focal points also will allow you to be much more flexible when a director asks for you to behave in a way that you hadn’t considered for any given character. No heed is given directly to what others are doing but instead the focus is on truly seeing the environment, which may include others, but without direct contact.
