ABSTRACT

Dictionary.com provides the definition of archetypal as: “adjective: perfect or typical as a specimen of something; being an original model or pattern or a prototype”. This chapter will reveal ten archetypal gestures, as introduced in the training by NMCA, allowing for you to experience what may be primal within you and to expand your movement options. From pushing to smashing, from lifting to reaching, these movements allow the body and psyche to awaken what may be lost ways of being to better relate to any character – or others in life! Whether fully expressed, or more physically subtle, termed as “veiling” by Michael Chekhov, or perhaps even invisible to the observer, these gestures provide a way to express a character's intentions or feelings.
