ABSTRACT

The upcycling method is a form of application in sustainable fashion design and is highly supported within fashion design projects to rediscover the potential of textile materials. Upcycling is considered an “assemblage (gathering, assembling)” that includes different approaches and diversity within the scope of this chapter. This chapter delves into the realm of upcycled fashion products, an intriguing space where memories and the individual processes of makers intertwine. Upcycling assembles the past, present, and future, exploring the profound connections between cherished clothing steeped in personal memories and the material world. This chapter thoroughly examines the implicit knowledge and intricate interactions encapsulated within these upcycled garments.

The chapter shows that upcycled garments and making processes, such as reusing, repairing, and mending, can be seen as assemblages. By doing so, it is shown that the relation and interaction between upcycling and memory within such assembly are revealed and unpacked in multiple ways to understand the concept.
