ABSTRACT

This chapter presents information regarding the field of religious studies as a transdisciplinary academic discipline aptly suited to examine the relationships, overlaps, and intersections of two popular global phenomena: religions and sports. After beginning with an anecdotal example, readers will be introduced to the tools, resources, and methodologies available when approaching research inquiries on the topics of religions and sports. Additionally, debates on defining religions and sports demonstrate the complexity of academic discourse and how this affects the adopted approaches of this book. The outline and framework of the book supplies readers with a clear road map of where the book’s journey will take them.
