ABSTRACT
This chapter will briefly narrate the political history of the reigns of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, highlighting relevant moments, important figures, and other relevant elements. This narrative will contextualize the decisive historical events, actors, texts, and themes that will be analyzed in detail in the subsequent chapters. As a survey of the place of claims of revelatory knowledge and their rhetorical uses under Charlemagne and Louis the Pious (ca. 768–840), this chapter offers a concise view of the contexts and consequences of the evidence that will be explored in subsequent chapters.
