ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 reviews the definition of Europe's space in literature, from Aeschylus to the 20th century revealing its complex and multifaceted nature, made up of a network of relations between differing units across time and space. In effect, the concept of Europe as a space as it emerges from the time of literature makes Europe a space without borders.
