ABSTRACT
Chapter two reviews the concepts of time and periodization within the history of the idea of Europe, from Homer to Goethe, and finds that the periodization of the history of Europe depended upon cultural perceptions and political events. The author advocates a reassessment of Europe's tradition in a comparative perspective with other traditions and histories and under the perspective of gender.
