ABSTRACT

This chapter is structured as follows. First, it explores the political and military structure of Tunisia from Bourguiba to the Ben Ali term. This retroactive analysis helps to provide context for the 2010–2011 uprisings and clarifies the role of the military because —these uprisings were not independent of the past. In the second part of the chapter, the genesis of the 2010–2011 uprisings is examined. This explanation helps to demonstrate the link between the reasons behind the military’s behaviour in the 2010–2011 uprising and provides background information before focusing on the key factors that contributed to the outcomes of the conflict.
