ABSTRACT

China’s governance experiences provide abundant research resources for the development of social science theory. So how to understand the China’s stable politics and economic growth is a hot topic. The central–local relationship that reflects historical trends and political culture is an important clue to explore the trajectory of China’s governance development. This chapter analyzes its characteristics from the aspects of political power, financial power, and public administration by examining the changes in the relationship between the central and local governments since the reform and opening up. The authors analyze the evolution of state power structures, the achievement of governance goals, and the maintenance of political resilience, and they propose the concepts of governance rectification and institutional inclusion. This chapter provides a theoretical perspective for understanding the development of governance systems with Chinese characteristics.
