ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses what is known as self-generated content, which has also been known as sexting, self-produced content, indecent images, child sexual abuse images, nudes, and youth-produced and sexually explicit images. The chapter addresses why children and young people send these images, the process of sexual development through adolescence, and why these images can form part of a gender identity narrative and sexual development. The chapter looks at non-sexual images and how the normative practice of sending photographs can become muddled with images that are sexual. Age, gender and sex are a theme throughout the chapter.
