ABSTRACT

This chapter covers communication patterns in the digital realm. The use of verbal and non-verbal language is discussed and, how this is often missing from the digital landscape and how the move forward with technology is changing what we humans now accept as normative methods for making ourselves heard among the noise and how young people see this space as a way to convey how they feel. The chapter looks at the curated self online and how we and children present on real-time platforms such as video conferencing software like Zoom or Teams with or without classroom etiquette. The immediacy and the need to be in a relationship with someone directly or in a parasocial relationship when using technology match attachment processes. The chapter ends with a reflection on safeguarding online when using video platforms and why this needs to be in the awareness of the practitioner.
