ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how online grooming, also called online child sexual exploitation, occurs. The reader is taken through the etymology and beginnings of grooming as a process and how this is applicable to the children who become victims of this crime. Examples from therapy highlight how children are confused by the messages currently taught in education and how the trickster groomer uses the same processes that underpin attachment and peer relationships to befriend children in order to exploit them for images via technology. Readers are reminded to teach about bodily sensations and early warning signals to assist children in conversing with adults about online contacts. A short reflection on number of daily online gamers is discussed to inform readers as to the extent of how easily this issue can occur.
