ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the IMD ecosystem and its web of stakeholders as an example of what drives issues of cost and outcomes throughout the entire healthcare industry. In the aftermath of the COVID pandemic, healthcare leaders dusted themselves off and started looking past the challenges they had just overcome to what opportunities may have been laid before them throughout the ordeal. Fast forward more than two decades since the IOM report and we still haven't fixed the problem that shook the healthcare industry to its core back then, and we still don't even know how many people die in the United States every year from preventable medical errors. The most widely cited recent estimates run somewhere from 22,000 all the way to 250,000.
