ABSTRACT

The chapter is focused on the influence of modern western culture on the development of the Chinese lexicon. The general effect of western culture is firstly introduced. The chapter then elucidates three situations of translated words in Japanese and Japanese loanwords. Following this, three borrowing ways of loanwords, namely, complete transliteration, transliteration mixed with free translation, and semi-transliteration and semi-free translation, are fully illustrated. Furthermore, self-created neologisms and old words used in new ways are articulated. Finally, the emergence of neologisms and loanwords influenced by western culture is summarized in the chapter.
