ABSTRACT
The chapter introduces the innovation of Chinese lexicon after the May Fourth Movement launched in 1919, mainly including five aspects. In this context, the basis of lexical development of contemporary Chinese is firstly introduced. Then the birth of new words and new meanings of contemporary Chinese is described. Entry and adjustment of loanwords and the blend of Mandarin and dialect words are further illustrated. Finally, necessity of lexical standardization is summarized.
