ABSTRACT

This chapter ties into the emerging interest in ethics in tourism and the profound changes that have been taking place in society over the last three decades regarding the ethical treatment of animals. There has been a significant shift in how humans regard animals over time, and the transition of thought is getting much stronger, especially in the last few years. Animals are no longer viewed as just property to be used and abused without regard for welfare, and this shift represents one of the greatest changes in Western morality. The chapter advances through a discussion of the touranimalscape, which is based on a discussion of animal classes, how animals are used, settings, engagement mode, the state of animals, mediators, impacts of use, and the ethical consideration of use. The argument is that the tourism industry cannot ignore these changing values and attitudes. The chapter sets the stage follows is an attempt to put all this research into context and challenge our field to advance in policy, practice, and research.
