ABSTRACT

This chapter considers aspects of exercise teaching. The methods of learning skilled movement are considered including information processing and motor control theory. The stages of motor learning are highlighted, and dynamic systems theory considered with a clinical case illustration used. Explicit and implicit learning is considered. Simplifying movement is explained and teaching methods including demonstration, and cueing are described. Auditory, tactile, and visual cues are discussed. Constraints based coaching is described with a further case note to illustration. Methods of exercise practice are considered with constant and variable methods described. Motivation is defined. Practicalities of exercise teaching is considered with health and safety and warmup discussed.
