ABSTRACT

Assessment of pathology and performance is considered for therapists and personal trainers. The SOAP format is introduced and explained with a systematic guide to subjective assessment given. The concept of tissue irritability is considered with the SIN factor pneumonic used. Objective assessment details active, passive, and resisted movements and proceeds to neurodynamic testing. The straight leg raise (SLR), slump, and prone knee bend (PKB) tests are described and illustrated. Red flags and contraindications to rehabilitation are detailed with clinical case notes used to clarify. The process of clinical reasoning is described with treatment planning considered. Patient subgrouping is described with reference to the Startback studies. Assessment of movement quality is described with posture assessment and intervention described and critically appraised. Needs analysis is considered. Movement screening is described with examples given.
